DIY: Upcycled Oatmeal Container into Headband Holder

We have 3 girls in the house (including myself) and a ridiculous amount of headbands, accessories and bows.  I had already made a bow holder but I still needed to do something with all that other stuff.  So I set out to make a headband holder and having seen on the internet somewhere that oatmeal containers are the perfect size for a headbands I picked some fabric and gathered my supplies.  I used a fat quarter of floral fabric (dark enough that the oatmeal container wouldn't show through) from my favorite little fabric store Sew Flakes, an old oatmeal container, Mod Podge and clear spray paint.  First I cleaned the oatmeal container and measured and cut my fabric.  The top of the fabric I tucked under the lip of the container and I left about half an inch along the bottom that I Mod Podged down.  I did one coat of MP between the container and the fabric putting it on and smoothing the fabric on as I went, making sure to smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.  I then put three coats on the top of the fabric, letting each coat dry between applications.  Then I covered the whole thing with a coat of clear spray paint.  Voila, headband holder with storage for all those other hair accessories.  Now go eat some oatmeal or better yet make some cookies and create your own!
Since I made this ALL of the hair accessories seem to be MIA.

I love this fabric.  $2.75 for a fat quarter at Sew Flakes!

  1. The containers I have are too skinny...I tried doing this about a month ago.

  2. Oh no! I used a Great Value one. Although I doubt you would go to War-mart (as Ellie calls it) just for one of their containers! I think the GV one is fatter than the Quaker one I have.
