What you will need:
- About 1/3 yard of fleece or any scraps big enough to fit the pattern
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Thread
- Pencil and Paper
Fold your fabric so that the right sides are facing out. Place the pattern right side up. I put the straight side on the fold because that means less sewing. I add my seam allowance now. Note: the seam allowance is different if you plan on hemming or not. Make the thumb area really wide or your thumb hole will be tiny. Cut through both layers. Next put your pattern right side down and cut through both layers. You have now cut out the left and right gloves.
See the top? I changed my mind and ended up not doing a the hem. You still need the seam allowance between the thumb and forefinger area. |
If you want to hem the edges for along the arm and fingers do so now. Instead of a hem I just did a zigzag stitch. You don't have to do anything because fleece won't fray. Take your gloves and turn them so that the right sides are together. Sew along the sides and in between the thumb and where the pointer finger is. Make sure you don't sew up the openings for your fingers, thumb or arm. Turn them inside out and admire your handy work. Something not quite right? Modify until it fits perfectly.
See the two seams? I was unsatisfied with the fit so I modified it. I made a new seam, and trimmed the old one, on the right. |
These are easy to make and easy to modify for a mitten also. Just round the top and thumb and sew all the way around the thumb and fingers. I am never satisfied with a regular glove. I like my fingers free. Happy sewing.
Those are so great...and it looks easy enough for someone like me that doesn't really know how to sew to attempt! Great tutorial.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashley! I don't really follow conventional sewing techniques and I bet my Grandmother is watching me from Heaven and rolling her eyes and shaking her head!
